Four star review in The Times for Acis at Buxton

We were delighted to receive a four star review in The Times, after the opening night of Acis & Galatea at this year’s Buxton Festival. Four more performances followed and were very well received by audiences.

“There’s no mistaking the musical quality. Anna Dennis leads the cast with her polished Galatea, though she’s not matched in power by Samuel Boden’s sweet Acis. There’s gentle beauty from Jorge Navarro Colorado’s Damon/Coridon, while Edward Grint convinces as the raging, rock-wielding Polyphemus. Christian Curnyn’s Early Opera Company brings a lovely grace to Handel’s score. I won’t give away the end, but suffice to say [Martin] Constantine has a surprise in store for us.”

Genevieve Girling took these wonderful photos of the new production, capturing designer Anisha Fields‘ vision of a 1960s lecture theatre, eventually giving way to a a pastoral idyll, as Acis is transformed by Galatea’s magic.

Iford Arts hosts a staged in concert performance of Acis & Galatea on 18 September, with Nick Pritchard and Katherine Crompton as the titular lovers, joined by the Buxton cast (Edward Grint, Jorge Navarro Colorado and David de Winter) plus elements of the Buxton production.
